Deputy Chairman Senate Saleem Mandviwalla Saturday denied that efforts are under way to remove Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani from his office. A day ago, Mandviwalla had referred to the recent meetings of former President Asif Ali Zardari with Maulana Fazlur Rahman and Mir Hasil Bizenjo and said a no-trust motion against the incumbent chairman of the Senate would be brought if opposition parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, National Party and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) took a collective decision.

However, he distanced himself from those remarks, claiming that the statement regarding efforts to remove Sanjrani was wrong.

"The statement regarding the [ouster] of Senate chairman is incorrect," he said in an official statement. "I have not given any statement regarding the removal of Senate chairman."

Mandviwalla said that the decision to remove the Senate chairman is to be taken by political parties, adding that the earlier statement associated with him "is based on a misunderstanding."

Sanjrani made it to the Upper House of Parliament after garnering support from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in order to block a chairman from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in March 2018 Senate election.

But recently, rumours started making the round after Sanjrani - who is believed to be control freak - stopped his deputy-Mandviwalla-from inviting foreign dignitaries to visit the country without prior permission of the chairman.

Things became further complicated after Sanjrani stopped Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudry's entry in the House for a complete session a few months back, which the government thought, the chairman did in apparent move to please PML-N, the major opposition political party in Senate.

The flamboyant information minister also claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed anger over the decision taken by the chairman Senate, for banning the entry of top government minister after he did not bow down before the opposition, whom he targeted for their alleged involvement in mega corruption.

This paved the way for the PML-N to start lobbying to oust the Senate chairman with the help of PPP, as both the parties had already been looking for an opportunity to oust Sanjrani who had accused of "hijacking" the Senate elections with the help of the powerful military establishment.
